Making Fundations FUN!

This is what our daily Fundations practice looks like.

Sometimes we use Wikki Sticks to drill sounds and spelling.

On other days we use our Gel Boards and special stylus to spell trick words. We are learning second grade trick words and we also review first grade words.

Another activity the students enjoy is using the magnetic letter boards. These boards and magnetic tiles allow the students to practice building words.
Students use their Student Notebooks as a resource for spelling sounds.

Additionally, students use white boards to record sounds, words, and sentences that are dictated to them. They use these boards to mark words and show where they are divided into syllables.

At the end of each unit students are given a skill Check-up in their Composition workbook.

Second Grade Standards:

Reading: Foundational Skills

Phonics and Word Recognition

3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
  1. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
  2. Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.
  3. Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.
  4. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
  5. Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.
  6. Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

Happy Birthday Dr. King

Today we read about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We learned about his life and how he impacted others.
We learned he didn't give up on his dream.
We also enjoyed watching this video Mrs. Mulligan shared with us.
Have a wonderful weekend,

A Very Busy December!

As we say farewell to 2015 and move on to a new year, I wanted to share some of the exciting activities and events from December. It was such a busy month!
The students used Versatiles to practice the use of suffixes -s and -es. They wrote creative winter acrostic poems and cut fancy snowflakes to decorate the bulletin board in the hallway. We shared our favorite holiday traditions on the Padlet on our blog. We wrote thank you notes to the lunch staff. The students sang and danced their hearts and feet out at the Second Grade Winter Concert! And finally, the 2nd graders enjoyed a wonderful presentation by Mr. Neal Nichols Jr. during his Geography Game Show.

The students also enjoyed practicing "Read to Someone" during Daily Five.

They also completed some really amazing and creative dioramas to conclude our study of Realistic Fiction. (More about that project is coming soon!)

The holidays are upon us.
I'm excited for my girls to be home-everyone under one roof! I always look forward to the traditions we have created as a family. What do you look forward to each year? You can add your favorite tradition below.
